Queen Iannas of house Shaalthaan

 Iannas Shaalthaan belongs to the ancient and noble clan of the Shaalthaas, one of the most prominent families of Allanard and lords of the island of Yren since time immemorial.

As determined as she was ruthless, her love affair with Aerevar began in an unedifying manner. Convinced that her husband was weak and foolish, she tried to kill him in a sort of coup d’état.

Aerevar, who at the time was playing the part of the fool to deceive the nobles, was very impressed by his wife’s determination. Instead of punishing her, he proposed to share power.

He would retain the real power, but the Queen (her title as the Emperor’s wife) would be his most trusted advisor and handle all social matters with the unruly Elven nobility.

Iannas thus became her husband’s right-hand, learning to respect, if not love, him (while Aerevar is very much in love with her). She shares all thoughts and secrets with her husband, becoming a kind of spy chief and minister of the interior. Less inclined to decisive and theatrical actions like her husband, she prefers to eliminate her adversaries with her shadow agents (The Black Veil). Much more vindictive than the Emperor, she usually holds a grudge until she can take her revenge, whether it is a cutting remark at a banquet or a knife in the shoulder blades. However, she is also a woman who knows how to reward those who serve her well and does not forget a kindness she has received, repaying it with the same determination as wrongs.

Although she is the mother of Lilas, who in some ways resembles her, she has not been able to give the ruler a son and is forced to tolerate Azandaremias’ claim to the title of Empress (as she is the mother of the heir to the throne of Karaethar). But for Iannas, she can boast any title, for she knows full well that the true empress for Aerevar is she.
